Intro:

-Verse 1
          C G1
The other day when we were walking by the graveyard near the house
              C/B1 Am
You asked me if I thought we would ever die
        C G1
And if life and love both fade so predictably
                        C/B1 Am
We've made ourselves a kind of predictable lie

          F
And so I pictured us like corpses
           G2
Lying side by side in pieces
         C/B2 Am
In some dark and lonely plot under a bough
              F
We looked so silly there all decomposed
      G2
Half turned to dust in tattered clothes
           C/B2 Am
Though we probably look just as silly now

-Chorus
          F G2
Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye to all this dog-eared innocence
         F C C/B2 Am
I can't pretend that I can tell you what is going to happen next or how to be
             C C/B2 Am G3 F(Remember the high E-string)
But you have no i---de-a about me
     C
Do you?

-Verse 2
         C G1
And it left me to wonder if people ever know each other
          C/B1 Am
Or just stumble around like strangers in the dark
           C G1
'Cause sometimes you seem so strange to me, I must seem strange to you
                C/B1 Am
We're like two actors playing our parts

           F
Did you memorize your lines? 'Cause I did
              G2
Here's the part where I get so mad
      C/B2 Am
I tell you I can't forget the past
             F
You get so quiet now and you seem somehow
        G2
like a lost and lonely child
              C/B2 Am
And you just hope that the moment won't last

-Chorus
          F G2
Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye to all this dog-eared innocence
         F C C/B2 Am
I can't pretend that I can tell you what is going to happen next or how to be
             C C/B2 Am G3 F \
But you have no i---de-a about me / 2x
     C
Do you?

-Bridge
           F C
So there's always a way around
           F C
There's something tying our feet to the ground
          C/B2 Am
A moment passed we hear how it sounds

         C C/B2 Am G3 F
Then it seems a little less profound
            C C/B2 Am G3 F
Like we're all going the same way down
            C C/B2 Am G3 F
Like we're all going the same way down
          C C/B2 Am G F
I'm just trying to write it all down

-Verse 3
                C G2
'Cause I write songs and you write letters
         F G2
We are tied like two in tethers
         C G2
And we talk and read, and laugh and sleep
     F G2
At night in bed together
          C G2
And you wake in tears sometimes
                  F G2
I can see your thoughts flash across your eyes
          C G2
They say darling will you be kind,
              F G
will you be a good man and stay behind
    C/B2 Am
If I get old?

-Outro 1
               F G2
And then the letters all pass through my head
           C C/B2 Am
With the words that I was told
            F G2
About the fading flesh of life and love
      C C/B2 Am
The failures of the bold
       F G2
I can list each crippling fear
           C C/B2 Am
like I'm reading from a will

          C C/B2 Am G3 F
And I'll defy everyone and love you still
        C C/B2 Am G3 F
I will carry you with me up every hill
           Am C/B3 C C/B3 Am
And if you die before I die I'll carve your name out of the sky
     Am C/B3 C C/B3 Am
I'll fall asleep with your memory and dream of where you lie

-Interlude
         F C C/B2 Am
Maybe better to move on and to let life just carry on and I may be wrong

-Outro 2
          C
Still I try
               C G2 Am G3 Am
Because it's better to love, whether you win or lose or die
               C G2 Am G3 Am
Because it's better to love, whether you win or lose or die
      C G2 Am G3 Am
It's better to love, and I will love you 'til I die

Intro: C G C F

C G
The other day, when we were walking by the graveyard near the house,
             C F
You asked me if I thought we would ever die.
         C G
And if life and love both fade so predictably,
           C F

In some dark and lonely blood under a bow.
               C G
We looked so silly there, all decomposed, half turned to dust,
                              C F
In tattered clothes, but we probably look just as silly now.

         C G
Bye bye bye bye, bye bye to all this dogged innocence.
           C F
I can't pretend that I can tell you what is going to happen next,
           C
Or how to be.
             C F Em G C Em
But you have no idea about me, do you?

        C G
And it left me to wonder if people will ever know each other
           C F
By just stumbling around like strangers in the dark.
           C
'Cause sometimes you seem so strange to me,

I must seem strange to you.

You get so quiet now, and you seem, somehow,
        G
Like a lost and lonely child.
              C F
And you just hope that the moment won't last.

         C G
Bye bye bye bye, bye bye to all this dogged innocence.

When Mikel plays the G chord in this song,
he only plucks the top 4 strings.
In the into and at some points in the song
he strums the D string and then strums the chord.
This is subtle, but it makes the chord sound like
a D chord at first. At other points in the song,
he does strum the whole G chord. So it's tricky,
but if you want it to be perfect, you can listen
closely and see what I mean.

Another side note - The B/C, A/C, and G/C chords
are C chords with B, A and G on the bottom instead of C.
I'm sure they have more official names than that, but
this will do for now. Let me know if you know what
their official name is, and i'll add them in.

C Cadd9
The other day, when we were walking by the graveyard near the house,
            G Am
You asked me if I thought we would ever die.
C Cadd9
And if life and love both fade so predictably,
                     G Am
We've made ourselves a kind of predictable life.

And so I pictured us like corpses, lying side by side in pieces,

In some dark and lonely blood under a bow.
           C Cadd9
We looked so silly there, all decomposed, half turned to dust,
                                 G Am
In tattered clothes, but we probably look just as silly now.
       C Cadd9
Bye bye bye bye, bye bye to all this dogged innocence.
       G F

Or how to be.
