Steal My Kisses by Ben Harper Steal My Kisses Ok, this is how the song sounds from the recording I have. He starts out beat boxing then the chord progression for basically the whole song is as follows: e-----3----5----7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| B-----3----5----7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| G-----4----5----7----5----4-----------------------------------------------| D-----x----x----x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| A-----x----x----x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| E-----x----x----x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| After this sequence the whole thing pretty much just repeats all over again. Now if just playing/singing solo, this might sound a little dry, so to make it sound fuller you add notes on the D string. When Ben plays it, he's got accompaniment from a bass and a drum set, so it sounds much fuller. Anyways, try this if you're playing solo: e-----3----5----7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| B-----3----5----7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| G-----4----5----7----5----4-----------------------------------------------| D-----5----5----7----5----5-----------------------------------------------| A-----x----x----x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| E-----x----x----x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| You can even make the first chord in the progression a full barre chord and just play upper portion of it by not pressing down on the low E string. This might make fingering a easier, but it's hard to damp the A string while using the barre formation so I'm not a big fan of this. Playing the A string brings in too much bass and takes something away the highs in the song...in my personal opinion. However, you can ornament the song pretty easily with the slide Ben does between the and third chords in the progression: e-----3----5----6/7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| B-----3----5----6/7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| G-----4----5----6/7----5----4-----------------------------------------------| D-----x----x----x-x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| A-----x----x----x-x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| E-----x----x----x-x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| Again, the fuller version of this looks like: e-----3----5----6/7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| B-----3----5----6/7----5----3-----------------------------------------------| G-----4----5----6/7----5----4-----------------------------------------------| D-----5----5----6/7----5----5-----------------------------------------------| A-----x----x----x-x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| E-----x----x----x-x----x----x-----------------------------------------------| You can also do a step down from the third chord in the progression: e-----3----5----7--6--5----3-----------------------------------------------| B-----3----5----7--6--5----3-----------------------------------------------| G-----4----5----7--6--5----4-----------------------------------------------| D-----x----x----x--x--x----x-----------------------------------------------| A-----x----x----x--x--x----x-----------------------------------------------| E-----x----x----x--x--x----x-----------------------------------------------| And with notes on the D string: e-----3----5----7--6--5----3-----------------------------------------------| B-----3----5----7--6--5----3-----------------------------------------------| G-----4----5----7--6--5----4-----------------------------------------------| D-----5----5----7--6--5----5-----------------------------------------------| A-----x----x----x--x--x----x-----------------------------------------------| E-----x----x----x--x--x----x-----------------------------------------------| That's pretty much it, except for a brief bridge where he plays: e-----4/5----5----4----3---------------------------------------------------| B-----3/4----4----3----2---------------------------------------------------| G-----2/3----3----2----1---------------------------------------------------| D-----2/3----3----2----1---------------------------------------------------| A-----x------x----x----x---------------------------------------------------| E-----x------x----x----x---------------------------------------------------| -------------- version 2 The INTRO is just beat boxing for about ten seconds, and then the guitar comes in and plays the following: (G) (C) (D) (G) e|-3--------3--------5--------3 B|-3--------5--------7--------3 G|-4--------5--------7--------4 D|-5--------5--------7--------5 A|-5--------3--------5--------5 E|-3--------------------------3 After strumming the entire chord once, there is a series of little upstrokes and mutes, and the rythm for those would be kind of pointless to tab out. And remember that occasionally during the song you'll hear him slide from the C chord to the A chord. This repeats throughout the entire song except for two parts, one where there is just beat boxing, and another where it goes into a break like this at the 1:54 mark in the song: (F) (G) |--1-1\3-3-3-1-1-1-1--1-1\3-3-3-1--| |--1-1\3-3-3-1-1-1-1--1-1\3-3-3-1--| |--2-2\4-4-4-2-2-2-2--2-2\4-4-4-2--| |--3-3\5-5-5-3-3-3-3--3-3\5-5-5-3--| |--3-3\5-5-5-3-3-3-3--3-3\5-5-5-3--| |--1-1\3-3-3-1-1-1-1--1-1\3-3-3-1--| and just repeat that once or something. -------------- version 3 it is always the same scheme: G Am7 (Bbm7) Bm7 Am7 G ( Bbm7 is played only once) intro: G Am7 Bbm7 Bm7 Am7 G (Bis) ----- verse: -------- G Am7 Bbm7 Bm7 Am7 G I put into Nashville, Tennessee, but you wouldn't even come around to see me G Am7 Bbm7 Bm7 Am7 G And since your headin up to Carolina, You know I gonna be right there behind you chorus: -------- G Am7 Bbm7 'Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you Bm7 Am7 G Always have to steal my kisses from you G Am7 Bbm7 I always have to steal my kisses from you Bm7 Am7 G Always have to steal my kisses from you verse: Now I love to feel that warm southern rain, just to hear it fall is the sweetest sounding things And to see it fall on your simple country dress it's like heaven to me I must confess chorus: 'Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you Always have to steal my kisses from you bridge: ------- F#G F F#G G F F# F#G F#F e|-2/3-x...x-1-2/3-3-|-1-1-2--2/3--2\1-|---|---| B|-2/3-x...x-1-2/3-3-|-1-1-2--2/3--2\1-|---|---| G|-3/4-x...x-2-3/4-4-|-2-2-3--3/4--3\2-|-%-|-%-| D|-4/5-x...x-3-4/5-5-|-3-3-4--4/5--4\3-|---|---| A|-4/5-x...x-3-4/5-5-|-3-3-4--4/5--4\3-|---|---| E|-2/3-x...x-1-2/3-3-|-1-1-2--2/3--2\1-|---|---| verse: Now I've been hangin around you for days, but when I'm leanin you just turn your head away I know you didn't mean that She said I love the way you think, but I hate the way you act chorus:(once "a cappella and then with the guitar) 'Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you Always have to steal my kisses from you -------------- version 4 Tuning : E A D G B E when he does it on Live in Mars But it is in D G C F A D when he does it on the albulm this is the main riff repeated throughout the song, pretty basic, listen to it for the correct rhythm G5 Am e|-------------------------------|----------------------------------------| B|-----8----8---8---8---8---8-8--|--10---10-10---10--10--10---10-10---11--| G|-----7----7---7---7---7---7-7--|---9----9--9----9---9---9----9--9-------| D|-----5--5-5---5---5---5---5-5--|--10---10-10---10--10--10---10-10-------| A|-------------------------------|----------------------------------------| E|-------------------------------|----------------------------------------| A#m/Bm G5 e|-------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| B|-----11/12---12-12----12-----12---10-|------8----8---8---8---8---8-8-----| G|-----10/11---11-11----11-----11----9-|------7----7---7---7---7---7-7-----| D|-----11/12---12-12----12-----12---10-|------5--5-5---5---5---5---5-5-----| A|-------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| E|-------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| ------ CHORDS USED: G-355433 C-X35553 C#-X46664 D-X57775 G C C# D I put into nashvile Tennesse D C G but you wouldn't even come to see me G C C# D you stick your head up to carolina D C G you know I'm gonna be right there behind you G C C# D cause I always have to steal my kisses from you D C G always have to steal my kisses from you G C C# D always have to steal my kisses from you D C G always have to steal my kisses from you THE CHORDS ARE THE SAME FOR THE REST OF THE SONG Now I love to hear that warm southern rain Just to here it fall it the sweetest sound I think and to see it fall on your simple country dress it's like heaven to me I must confess cause I always hqave to steal my kisses from you always have to steal my kisses from you always have to steal my kisses from you I always have to steal my kisses from you Now I've been hanging round you for days but when I lean in you just turn your head away ohh no you didn't mean that she said ' I love the way you think, but I hate the way you act Cause I always have to steal my kisses from you always have to steal my kisses from you 2 Times always to steal my kisses from you I always have to steal my kisses from you -------
