1.) "Let There Be Country"

[Intro]
F C G7 C

[Verse 1]
C F
Tom T. Hall is forty now
G7 C
And so is Bobby Bare
                F
Willie Nelson's getting gray
 G7 C
And Faron Young don't care
        F C
But the young ones keep on coming on
    G7 C
The old are slow to go
F C
   Let there be country
 G7 C
And let the country grow

[Chorus]
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
   Let the music roll along
F C
   Let there be country
    G7 C
And let me share the song

[Verse 2]
C F
No one picks like Bill Monroe
    G7 C
And don't George Jones sing great?
                    F
I can tell that the people care
       G7 C
By the people at my gate
     F C
Webb Pierce invites the tourists in
    G7 C
And Ray keeps them away
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
And let the country play

[Chorus]
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
   Let the music roll along
F C
   Let there be country
    G7 C
And let me share the song

[Verse 3]
C F
Ernest Tubb's got all of the soul
G7 C
He's had for all these years
                 F
Porter Wagoner's recitations
G7 C
Still bring me to tears
    F C
And when they do play Kitty Wells
    G7 C
You know she's still the Queen
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
And keep the country green

[Chorus]
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
   Let the music roll along
F C
   Let there be country
    G7 C
And let me share the song

[Verse 4]
C F
   Little Jimmy Dickens still sends
G7 C
Shivers through the crowd
                F
Mother Maybelle whispers now
        G7 C
But the heart comes through real loud
     F C
Gene Autry don't sing no more
     G7 C
Good ol' Tex Ritter's gone...
    N.C.
And somewhere downtown Nashville
                             F
A young man just got off the bus
       F
With a guitar in his hand, a pocketful of songs
  C
A lot of talent and a heart full of hope
               G7
And he's gonna be the next big country star
        N.C. C
And the country wheels roll on

[Chorus]
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
   Let the music roll along
F C
   Let there be country
    G7 C
And let me share the song
F C
   Let there be country
G7 C
   Let the music roll along
F C
   Let there be country
    G7 C
And let me share the song

2.) "One Piece at a Time"

[Intro]
E A B7 E

[Verse 1]
        E
Well, I left Kentucky back in '49
            A
And went to Detroit working on assembly line
    B7 E
The first year, they had me putting wheels on Cadillac's
      E
Every day, I'd watch them beauties roll by
    A
And sometimes I'd hang my head and cry
         B7 E
'cause I always wanted me one that was long and black
    E
One day, I devised myself a plan
            A
That should be the envy of most any man
    B7 E
I'd sneak it outta there in a lunchbox in my hand
     E
Now, getting caught meant getting fired
      A
But I figured I'd have it all by the time I retired
    B7 E
I'd have me a car worth at least a hundred grand

[Chorus]
           E
I'd get it one piece at a time
       A
And it wouldn't cost me a dime
       B7 E
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
          E
I'm gonna ride around in style
          A
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
            B7 E
'cause I'll have the only one there is around

[Verse 2]
       E
So the very next day when I punched in
        A
With my big lunchbox and with help from my friend
  B7 E
I left that day with a lunchbox full of gears
     E
I've never considered myself a thief
     A
But GM wouldn't miss just one little piece
  B7 E
Especially if I strung it out over several years
    E
The first day, I got me a fuel pump
        A
And the next day, I got me an engine and a trunk
     B7 E
Then I got me a transmission and all the chrome
           E
The little things I could get in my big lunchbox
     A
Like nuts and bolts and all four shocks
        B7 E
But the big stuff we snuck out in my buddy's mobile home
    E
Now up to now, my plan went alright
        A
'til we tried to put it all together one night
    B7 E
And that's when we noticed that something was definitely wrong
    E
The transmission was a '53
        A
And the motor turned out to be a '73
    B7 E
And when we tried to put in the bolts, all the holes were gone
      E
So we drilled it out so that it would fit
           A
And with a little bit of help from an adapter kit
   B7 E
We had that engine running just like a song
        E
Now the headlights, they was another sight
       A
We had two on the left and one on the right
    B7 E
But when we pulled out the switch, all three of 'em come on
    E
The back end looked kind of funny too
       A
But we put it together and when we got through
      B7 E
Well, that's when we noticed that we only had one tail fin
 E
About that time, my wife walked out
            A
And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts
        B7 E
But she opened the door and said, "Honey, take me for a spin"
      E
So we drove uptown just to get the tags
      A
And I headed her right on down main drag
        B7 E
I could hear everybody laughing for blocks around
       E
But up there at the courthouse, they didn't laugh
          A
'cause to type it up, it took the whole staff
         B7 E
And when they got through, the title weighed sixty pounds

[Chorus]
         E
I got it one piece at a time
       A
And it didn't cost me a dime
       B7 E
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
          E
I'm gonna ride around in style
          A
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
            B7 E
'cause I'll have the only one there is around

[Outro]
E
Uh, yeah, Red Rider, this is the Cottonmouth
E
In the psychobilly Cadillac, come on
E
Huh? Uh, this is the Cottonmouth
E
And negatory on the cost of this machine there, Red Rider
E
You might say I went right up to the factory and picked it up
E
It's cheaper that way
E
Uh, what model is it?
              E A
Well, it's a '49, '50, '51, '52, '53, '54, '55, '56
 B7 E
'57 '58 '59 automobile
                            A
It's a '60, '61, '62, '63, '64, '65, '66, '67
 B7 E
'68, '69, '70 automobile

And I had a good time
C G
   Looking for love
Em C
In the misty waters

She turns to you softly, you turn on the light

You use her and abuse her
        C G
And you know it ain't right
                              Em
To treat one who loves you so badly
           G D G
When she's doing the best that she can
    C G D G
You know she's doing the best that she can

Do you believe in dreams?
C G

G Em
Hoping that you'll find
D A7 D
   What you're looking for
C G
   You don't have to worry
       Em C
'cause there's a bright tomorrow
       G C
In the dreams that roll
     Am D G
In a young girl's mind

[Chorus]
C G C G
Only in shadows and lonely at night
    C G D
She turns to you softly, you turn on the light
    D
You use her and abuse her
        C G
And you know it ain't right
                              Em
To treat one who loves you so badly
           G D G
When she's doing the best that she can
    C G D G
You know she's doing the best that she can

[Verse 3]
   G
So hand me my guitar
          C G
There's a song that I was singing
                Em
Back when I was young
D A7 D
And I had a good time
C G
   Looking for love
Em C
In the misty waters
       G C
Of the seas that roll

In a young girl's mind
                 C
Of the seas that roll
     Am D G
In a young girl's mind

4.) "Mountain Lady"

[Intro]
A E7 A

[Verse 1]
         A A7
Mountain lady
       D A
Do you sit on your front porch in the cool of the day?
         E7
Mountain lady
        D A
Did you think your kids would ever come back to stay?
              A7
Mountain lady
         D A
Does the columbine still twine around your door?
            E7
And did you ever get a rug
             D A A7
To cover the cracks where my diaper drug on your wooden floor?

[Chorus]
        D
Oh, you Appalachian lady
       A D
Once I was your little baby
        A E7
And you rocked me in your homemade rocking chair
        D
Since I heard the wild goose calling
       A D
I have done a lot of falling
         A E7 A
Mountain lady, someday I'll come to you there

[Interlude]

         A A7
Mountain lady
         D A
Does the country church bell ring on Sunday morn?
         E7
Mountain lady
       D A
Do you still wear that old apron, ragged and torn?
              A7
Mountain lady
   D A
On winter nights, before our old fireplace
       E7
As you look into the flame
       D A A7
Do you ever call my name and do you see my face?

[Chorus]
        D
Oh, you Appalachian lady
       A D
Once I was your little baby
        A E7
And you rocked me in your homemade rocking chair
        D
Since I heard the wild goose calling
       A D
I have done a lot of falling
         A E7 A
Mountain lady, someday I'll come to you there
N.C. A
Mountain lady

5.) "Michigan City Howdy Do"

***[!] No capo [!]***

[Intro]
D

[Verse]
      D
Well, Johnson Van Dyke Grigsby was paroled in '89
   G D
He never walked on a carpet, never tasted dinner wine
        A7 G
His old eyes were slowly fading as he walked out of the gate
       D A7 D
And he breathed the first free air he'd breathed since 1908

[Chorus]
      G
Howdy do, Michigan City, you're sure a pretty sight
      D
But I know there's bigger cities and more exciting nights
      G
But I think your girls are pretty and I love your children too
         D
Michigan City, Indiana, howdy do
         A7 D
Michigan City, Indiana, howdy do

[Interlude]
D

[Verse 2]
       D
Filled with the joy of freedom, he didn't know that he was old
       G D
'cause time don't really matter when it's bubbling in your soul
        A7 G
Well, I don't think he was bitter, 'cause he sure had a smile
             D A7 D
And down the streets of Michigan City, he walked his first free miles

[Chorus]
      G
Howdy do, Michigan City, you're sure a pretty sight
      D
But I know there's bigger cities and more exciting nights
      G
But I think your girls are pretty and I love your children too
         D
Michigan City, Indiana, howdy do
         A7 D
Michigan City, Indiana, howdy do

[Outro]
D

6.) "Sold Out Of Flagpoles"

[Intro]
E A D G

[Verse 1]
  E
I walked down past the courthouse square
A
   Three blocks or maybe four
D
Run into my old friend there
                           G
That runs a handy hardware store
         E
I said, "Morning, Lonnie. What's the good word?"
        A
He said, "Abraham Lincoln, Lone Ranger
D G
Mickey Mouse, and I'm sold out of flagpoles"
  E
I popped the top off a soda pop
A
Laid a quarter on the bar
  D
I said, "Inflation is a dirty dog.
                           G
My payday sure ain't going far."
E
   "Liberty," said Lonnie
 A
"E Pluribus Unum
   D G
In God we trust, and I'm sold out of flagpoles"
E
I said, "Hey, Lonnie, did you see
A
Evel Knievel jumping on TV?
       D
Jumped thirteen buses with his machine.
                         G
Reckon he could jump fourteen?"
 E
"No doubt," said Lonnie
 A
"Winners keep on winning.
            D G
Even losers win sometimes, and I'm sold out of flagpoles"

[Interlude]
E A D G
E A D G

[Verse 2]
E
"Ain't this been a year," I said
     A
"For frost and blight and flood and drought.
D
Twice as many tornados.
                              G
Reckon it's all caused by fallout"
      E
"Nah, it's the season," said Lonnie
      A
"They change. Wind's gonna blow.
       D G
Always did, and I'm sold out of flagpoles"
 E
"Hey, what do you think about the sheriff's daughter
A
Running off with the preacher's son?
    D
The sheriff's wife had to hold him back
                               G
From going after them with his gun"
 E
"Boys and girls," said Lonnie
A
   Will get together.
D G
Everything's normal, and I'm sold out of flagpoles"

[Outro]
E A D G
And I'm sold out of flagpoles
E A D G
             Sold out of flagpoles
E A D G
             Sold out of flagpoles

7.) "Committed to Parkview"

[Intro]
A D A
D A

[Verse 1]
         A E
Theres a man across the hall who sits staring at the floor
                                           A
And he thinks he's Hank Williams, hear him singing through the door
         D A
Theres a girl in 202 who stops by to visit me
        B7 E
And she talks about her songs and the star that she should be
          A D
There's a lot of real fine talent staying in or passing through
        A D A D A
And for one thing or another, they're committed to Parkview

[Verse 2]
          A E
There's a girl in 207 coming down on Thorazine
                                    A
And a superstar's ex-drummer trying to kick Benzedrine
          D A
There's a real fine country singer who has tried and tried and tried
          B7 E
They just brought him in this morning, an attempted suicide
          A D
There are those who never made it, those who did and now are through
          A D A D A
Some came of their own good choosing, some committed to Parkview

[Interlude]
A D A
D A

[Verse 3]
          A E
There's a girl who cries above me loud enough to wake the dead
                                            A
They don't know what she has taken that has scrambled up her head
          D A
There's a boy just down below me who's the son of some well-known
       B7 E
He was brought in by his mother 'cause his daddy's always gone
          A D
There's a bum from down on Broadway and a few quite well-to-do
         A D A D A
Who have withdrawn from the rat race and committed to Parkview

[Verse 4]
          A E
They wake me about 6:30, just before the morning meal
                                             A
While they're taking my blood pressure, they ask me how I feel
      D A
And I always say, "Fantastic! There ain't nothing wrong with me!"
              B7 E
And then they give me my injection and I go right back to sleep
       A D
And my days are kind of foggy and the nights are dreamy too
N.C. A D A D A
For they're taking good care of me while committed to Parkview

She's outward-bound at any time she can

On down the line, someone waits her arrival

And the daughter of a railroad man is gone

[Verse 1]
              G
I guess we're over
         F C
And it's all been said before
            G
But I still want you
                  F C
Though there's no reason anymore
          Am
I can't remember
     F C
When you and I began
            G
It makes no difference
       F C
'cause love has lost again

F C

[Verse 2]
             G
If there's a reason
      F C
We forgot it long ago
                  G
And if there's an answer
     F C
It's one I'll never know
             Am
The price of giving
  F C
I just don't understand
            G
But it's collected
    F C
And love has lost again

All that's left now
       F C
Is the closing of the door
             G
It sounds so final
            F C
But I don't listen anymore
             Am
It's not the last time
          F C
That I'll break instead of bend
            G
But for the moment
F C
Love has lost again
             Am
It's not the last time
          F C
That I'll break instead of bend
