MAIN GUITAR PATTERN: Might seem a bit hard to play at first, but I think once you get the hang of playing the G on the E string in time, it starts to flow quite nicely. I struggled for a few minutes to begin with. I usually play with a pick, but for this song I think the pattern complements finger picking slightly more, using the thumb to reach the 2 bottom strings. play twice: e|-------------------------------------------------------| B|-------------1--0----------------0-h-1-----------------| G|---------0-------------------0-------------------------| D|-------------------------------------------------------| A|----3--------------------------------------------------| E|------------------------3------------------------------| e|--------------------------------------------------------------------| B|------------1--0-------0------------------1--------------0-h-1------| G|---------0-----------0-----------------2--------------0-------------| D|------------------------------------3-------------------------------| A|-----3--------------------------------------------------------------| E|-------------------------------------------------3------------------| This sequence repeats for all verses. CHORUS: C G F G with bright smiles and dark eyes C G F G bright smile dark eyes C G F everywhere I went oh G I was always searching for you C G F G bright smile dark eyes *The main melody can neearly be played on top of the chorus.. I think there's a bit of a tweak to it at the start line with the F, although I haven't noted it down because it's fairly hard to tab it exactly right. Maybe try it by ear.. Either way I think it sounds good enough in chords. BRIDGE: Am G C man is only half himself F G the other half is a bright thing Am G C he tumbles on by luck or grace F G for man is ever a blind thing [Verse 1] Now my work is done I feel I’m owed some joy Oh, Imogene and Abelard I’m your homeward boy But there’s another one That brings me to your door And the boat she weaved from the tidal reeds Was always tied to shore [Chorus] With bright smiles and dark eyes Bright smile, dark eyes Everywhere I went, oh I was always looking for you Bright smile, dark eyes [Verse 2] I’m looking for some peace But it’s so hard to find With Calamity Janes and the Steamboat Casanovas And Darling Clementines If she’s your only one Then she is also mine Just pin your heartbeat up against my heartbeat And you’ll see how well we rhyme See Josh Ritter Live Get tickets as low as $67 [Chorus] Man is only half himself The other half is a bright thing He tumbles on by luck or grace For man is ever a blind thing [Chorus] Smile, dark eyes Dark eyes Dark eyes | / slide up | \ slide down | h hammer-on | p pull-off | ~ vibrato | + harmonic | x Mute note | b Bend | pb Pre-bend | br Bend release | pbr Pre-bend release | brb Bend release bend ------------
