This is a span from the 4th fret, bottom E string
(Ab below middle C) up to the 10th fret, top e string
(2 D's above middle C), which on my classical are around 16cm, or
6.5", apart. There doesn't appear to be any footage of John Williams
playing this, but it would not surprise me if he can span this
between the tips of his index and baby fingers : but me, I have no
chance. :o) Your mileage may vary... So :
I have to play this by bringing the whole of my fretting hand under
and back towards me around the neck of the guitar, so that the palm
of my fretting hand is facing the fretboard from below it.
I fret the E string 4th fret with my thumb, and the e string 10th fret
with my baby finger, and arpeggio the two notes.
Then I snap my thumb back under the neck to a more normal position, and
while the thumb is going around the back, fret the E string 10th fret
with my ring finger (it's more or less over the fret at this point)
and barre the 8th fret below it to make the A string 8th fret note,
and the e string 8th fret note after.
Continue the piece by dropping the barre to the 7th fret and holding it
for the rest of the bar. - Malcolm :o)
