[Verse 1]
               D A
She said it’s hard for me to explain to you the brightness of the light,
                              D
I can still remember when my life was like that
                                A
A real and painless beauty I remember as a kid, when I thought that I knew
                D
everything, and in a way I did
           D G F#m A D G
She was a virgin then, a child in a million, with deep round hazel eyes of
  F#m A
blazing intuition
     D G F#m A
She called me over to her side and said will you please listen
   D G F#m A
I want to show you something, something I’ve just written
         G G F#m D
And I’m calling it Poetry And Jazz

[Verse 2]
     D A
She watched her happy family turn to a broken home, her father left with someone
           D
else, her mother on her own
                             A
Her fourteenth birthday her mother spent in tears, she celebrated on her own her
D
adolescent years
        D G F#m A D G
It was hell then, caught in the crossfire of an emotional triangle she
 F#m A
couldn’t keep together
D G F#m A
I held her softly and she sobbed upon my shoulder
       D G F#m A
Saying as you are the closest thing that I’ve got to a brother
    G G F#m D
Explain to me, why is life so sad

[Verse 3]
 D A D
Sixteen was better, cause sixteen was boys, makeup, parties, alcohol and clothes
                                   A
And saying to your boyfriend, come on get out of bed, its 3 o’clock in the
               D
afternoon, my mother’s coming back
          D G F#m A D G
And she smiled then, her eyes filled with laughter, she didn’t know if it was
            F#m A
love but it didn’t really matter
     D G F#m A
She called me on the phone and said get this big brother
      D G F#m A
I’ve just got rid of one boyfriend and got myself another
          G G F#m D
And listen, this one drives a Jag

[Verse 4]
     D A D
She left school and boyfriend for university, three years of study for an arts
degree
                                  A
Her clothes were outrageous, her hair was many colours, her work was radical and
D
so were her ideas
     D G F#m A D G F#m
She said this is brilliant, this place is heaven – on a score of 1 to 10 I’d give
            A
 this place 11
    D G F#m A D G
It kicks you up the arse and it fires you with ambition, I often used to feel as
      F#m A
if my life was just a prison
        G G F#m D
Now I realise it isn’t quite that bad

[Verse 5]
         D A
I was invited to an exhibition a little while ago to an art gallery in Paris
           D
where she has a studio
                                   A
She looked sophisticated, she was wearing a bronze tan, and she’d sold all her
          D
work for some outrageous sum
       D G F#m A
And I looked at her and I started laughing
                  D G F#m A
I said you’re supposed to be an artist, you’re supposed to be suffering
     D G F#m A
And she just smiled back and she pointed to this picture
       D G F#m A
Of a young girl around which she’d written out this poem
        G G F#m D
She’d shown me once, Poetry And Jazz

[Verse 6]
 D A D
My name is Angela, I am 12 years old, I’ve given up on working hard and doing as
I’m told
                                   A
I see a child psychologist who’s spotted in my head a recipe for delinquency or
 D
something just as bad
          D G F#m A D G
And I’ll fight for my independence, I see the world in another way to my
 F#m A
teacher and my parents
      D G F#m A D G
My priorities are different and my life is not as aimless, I am not disruptive, I
F#m A
 am not dangerous
       G G F#m D
I've rhythm and purpose, like Poetry and Jazz

[Verse 7]
               D A
She said it’s hard for me to explain to you the brightness of the light,
                              D
I can still remember when my life was like that
                                A

[Verse 1]
               D A
She said it’s hard for me to explain to you the brightness of the light,
                              D
I can still remember when my life was like that
                                A
A real and painless beauty I remember as a kid, when I thought that I knew

everything, and in a way I did
           D G D A D G
She was a virgin then, a child in a million, with deep round hazel eyes of
 D A
blazing intuition
     D G D A
She called me over to her side and said will you please listen

She watched her happy family turn to a broken home, her father left with someone
           D
else, her mother on her own
                             A
Her fourteenth birthday her mother spent in tears, she celebrated on her own her

        D G D A D G
It was hell then, caught in the crossfire of an emotional triangle she

 D A D
Sixteen was better, cause sixteen was boys, makeup, parties, alcohol and clothes
                                   A

She left school and boyfriends for university, three years of study for an art
