[Verse 1]
E
I went down, down, down to the factory
E7 B7
Early on a Monday morn.
B7
When I got down to the factory,
                      E
It was lonely. It was forlorn.
E E7
I couldn’t find Joe, Jack, John, or Jim;
E7 A
Nobody could I see:
A E
Nothing but buttons and bells and lights
B7 E
All over the factory.

[Verse 2]
E
I walked, walked, walked into the foreman’s office
E B7
To find out what was what.
B7
I looked him in the eye and I said, “What goes?”
                         E
And this is the answer I got:
E
His eyes turned red, then green, then blue,
                          A
And it suddenly dawned on me:
A E
There was a robot sitting in the seat
B7 E
Where the foreman used to be.

[Verse 3]
E
I walked all around, all around, up and down
E B7
And across that factory.
B7
I watched all the buttons and the bells and the lights.
                    E
It was a myst’ry to me.
E E7
I hollered, “Frank, Hank, Roy, Ray, Don, Dan,
E A
Bill, Phil, Ed, Fred, Pete!”
A E
And a great big mechanical voice boomed out:
B7 E
“All your buddies are obsolete!”

[Verse 4]
E
I was scared, scared, scared; I was worried; I was sick
E B7
As I left that factory.
B7
I decided that I had to see the president
                  E
Of the whole darn company.
E
When I got up to his office, he was rushing out the door
                      A
With a scowl upon his face
A E
’Cause there was a great big mechanical executive
B7 E
Sitting in the president’s place.

[Verse 5]
E
I went home, home, home to my ever-loving wife
E B7
And told her ’bout the factory.
B7
She hugged me and she kissed me and she cried a little bit
                 E
As she sat on my knee.
E
I don’t understand all the buttons and the lights,
                     A
But one thing I will say:
A E
I thank the good Lord that love’s still made
B7 E
In the good old-fashioned way.
