The Stranger by Jedd Hughes The Stranger Tuning:E A D G B E Key:G Capo:no capo Key of G chords (excepting the bridge): G/E G/F# G/F C/G Gmaj7/C G Em D# D Asus? e| ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- --3-- --0-- --3-- --2-- --0-- B| ----- ----- ----- --1-- --2-- --0-- --0-- --4-- --3-- --0-- G| --0-- --0-- --0-- --0-- --0-- --0-- --0-- --3-- --2-- --0-- D| --2-- --4-- --3-- --2-- --2-- --0-- --2-- --5-- --4-- --2-- A| --0-- --0-- --0-- --3-- --3-- --2-- --2-- --6-- --5-- --0-- E| --3-- --3-- --3-- --3-- ----- --3-- --0-- ----- ----- ----- *When he sings "Man it feels good to be the stranger now" at the end of the verse, Jedd strums the G chord, middle finger on the G note (E string), then throws in this little ditty w/ the ring finger & pinky WITHOUT letting go of the chord. He mixes this up going into the Bridge/Instrumental Break: e|----3-----------3~----| B|----0-----------------| G|----0-----3--4--------| D|----0-----------------| A|----2-----------------| E|----3-----------------| **During the Chorus, after singing each of the 1st two lines, Jedd throws in some licks to spice things up tie in a bassline through the progression. He does this in the same order each time. Strum the E chord, then move to the G chord and tie in the little lick while strumming, finishing on the Em. This is at like 23:56 on the video (Shed #7). Let it ring & get that airy sound for just a second. Em G Asus? e|----0--|--3--|---------------0~-| B|----0--|--0--|--------0---------| G|----0--|--0--|--0-------0-------| D|----2--|--0--|--2---------2-----| A|----2--|--2--|--0--0------------| E|----0--|--3--|------------------| [Intro] strumming G/E [Verse 1] G/E G/F# G/F G/C I've been the dreamer, I've been the drunk, been high as sunshine, low down in a funk, Gmaj7/C Em Asus? [Verse 2] G/E G/F# G/F G/C I tried religion, I tried free-wheelin', I tried believing in things I wasn't feeling, Gmaj7/C Em Asus? I almost lost myself just trying to get found. D# D G* Man it's feeling good to be the stranger now. [Chorus 1] Em G** I started leaving without knowing Em G** I started walking just kept going Em G A?*** And I was so gone there was no point in turning 'round. D# D G**** Man it's feeling good to be the stranger now. ****Bridge/Instrumental Break**** Practice this @ 24:00 in the video. You might look at the developing pattern here as cut time (half time) compared to what you learned for the end of each verse. Jedd keeps flatting the note at the end. This pattern finishes with a suspended C chord carrying a G in the bass a lot like the C/G in the verse. G G C/Gsus? e|----3-----------3~----------2~--- --3-----------1~----------0-0--| B|----0---------------------------- --0-------------------------0--| G|----0-----3--4--------3--4------- --0-----3--4--------3--4----0--| D|----0---------------------------- --0-------------------------2--| A|----2---------------------------- --0-------------------------3--| E|----3---------------------------- --3-------------------------3--| Then we get to a tricky slidey part :) It is possible he's doing something a bit different here, but--thanks to the video & my wife's stellar ear--this is very close. Here we have to start with the end in mind a bit as we slide a couple notes up while moving to the next set of notes to slide. Keep in mind counting to 5 by the time you get to the G7. Also, Jedd slides 3 times, then in the middle of the run he moves up without sliding to hammer on the next pair of notes & slides into the G7 chord. Striking the open G string at any point, even the D#7 chord, just helps the key of the song stay present. Feels like a future with no history hangin' around. D# D G* Man it's feeling good to be the stranger now. [Chorus 2] Em G** I started leaving without knowing. Em G** I started walking just kept going. Em G Asus?*** And I was so gone there was no point in turning 'round. D# D G Man it's feeling good to be the stranger now. [Outro] -- here @ about 25:16 in the video he changes the D* chord by leaving the high E string open. D# D G Man it's feeling good to be the stranger now. D# D* G***** Man it's feeling good... ...to be the stranger. I am the stranger. ***** To finish the song, Jedd moves through this series of 8 beats, repeats, slows the tempo, and fades it out.
