Michael by Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks

                  Michael

Tuning: E A D G B E

Well I hugged a stranger
       Am
On the corner of Parry Street
       Em
He was crying about his brother's death
       G C
Whilst clinging on to me

C
And I was quick to judge him
              Am
From a crying man I nearly walked away
           Em
But it's a cold world for those who suffer
         G
And the least I could do was stay

C
And rolled this man a cigarette
           Am
Watched him cry into my arms
     Em
Held by the cold Fremantle air
         G
And the distant car alarms

C
On a quiet Thursday evening
                Am
After seeing a friend play a show
     Em
Oh I thought about my own three brothers
           G
It's been a while since we've been close

C
But Michael lost his brother
              Am
Whilst he was locked in a jail bed
            Em
He was the eldest of three siblings
                   G
And he wished that God would take him instead

C
And I felt him tremble
            Am
I felt him shaking in my arms
        Em
Oh he'd speak to me so softly
               G
And then he'd scream at passing cars

C
So I asked where he was headed
                   Am
And he said he was off to see his little boy
         Em
He had a family left shattered
              G
And a younger brother left distraught

C
So I said "Well you better be strong for your family"
           Am
And then he told me his brother's name
        E G
But the bitterness in the winter's air stole our words once again

C
So I rolled him another cigarette
                    Am
And he told me that I had lucky eyes
      Em G
And I looked at his and saw them glistening in the cold street lights

C
And he grabbed my hand
            Am
He asked if I was sent from above
        Em
Oh but I'd just come from the kebab shop
      G
Oh I wished that was enough

C
But he said he's got some dope on him
               Am
If I wanna get high in the morning
        Em G
I just shrugged and said "Maybe my friend" and that's that's the last I ever saw
C
The last I saw of poor old Michael
         Am
Though I still feel his heart tear
      Em G C
Oh it bellowed throught the concrete and the cold winter's ai--r
Am Em G
ai--r, ai--r, o--oh

C Am Em (x5)
