He then bends the 6th string at the 3rd fret to get to the Em. The strum pattern is generally him picking root notes (I think he picks the A string on the D chord) and him strumming the chord down 2 times and sometimes hitting the chord a 3rd time on the upstrum. It sounds like he's bouncing around between the chords. I really suggest watching the Youtube video of him playing to get an idea how to pick and strum this song. It's really apparent what he does with the hammer-ons on the Em, raking the strings on an upstrum near the bridge on the Em, the bass notes he picks, and his strum pattern.
