G C D G His son he is the Chazan, though his voice he's never heard. C D G But he sits there, enjoying every word. G C D C He watches every motion, every gesture that he makes. G C A D And he stays till the very end, how ever long it takes. G C D G And when the davening is over, he's the first to reach his son. C D G And the deaf man in the shteeble says,"Well done". G C D G Now it's right before Yom Kippor, and in the shteeble there is fear. G C A D They want to start Kol Nidre, but the Chazan's still not there. C D G D/F# Em Oh, the shul was filled with people, as the night begins to fall. C D G But the deaf man's chair stands empty, by the wall. G C D C And suddenly the Chazan, he comes rushing through the door. G C A D He's wearing his white Chazan's hat, he's never worn before. G C D G He pauses for a moment, at his father's empty chair. C D G And quietly, he wipes away a tear. G C D G And he runs up to the bima, for there's no time left to wait. G C A D And half the shul can hear the rabbi ask, "How come so late?" C D G D/F# Em "Oh, just getting ready for Yom Kippur", is all he'd say. C D B E F# But now, I'm going up to pray--ay--ay . B E F# B And he takes his place surrounded by the holy torah ring. B E F# B And in a voice so beautiful, he begins to sing. E F# B E Oh, every heart was broken, oh, and every soul turned bright. E F# B From his Kol Nidre, that Yom Kippor night. A D E D And when he finished davening, the rabbi asked to tell, A D B E What was it he was thinking of, that made him sing so well. A D E A "Well you knew my dad was deaf", he said, "Last night he passed away. D E A It's the first time that my father's, heard me pray".
