Guitar Exercise Finger Speed And Independence

These are two finger exercises I use to increase dexterity and accuracy.
For both exercises, your best bet is using a metronome to start slow and work your way up at increments of 10
bpm. Once you are around 150 bpm, you can go down to 75 bpm and practice these as eight notes (now going up by
increments of 5). Again, at 150, you can go back down to 75 bpm and practice these as sixteenth notes.
Overall, speed isn't as important as accuracy and clarity. Practice good posture to keep all of your ligaments
from straining. Keep your wrist at a nuetral position (don't bend it much left, right, down, or up). Work on
hearing every note well before trying to play faster.
This first part is mostly for finger independence. Practicing this anywhere on the neck, on any string, should
be a good workout for most players if they're not used to finger exercises. Even practicing the dexterity of
just two fingers, say the pinky and ring, going back and forth is a good exercise as well.

This next part is mostly for speed. Going up the neck, each time you come to your pinky, you shift your index
finger down one and start over (so, 1 2 3 4 then shift, 2 3 4 5 all the way up). Going down the neck, each
time you come to your index finger, you place your pinky on the fret down from where it was previously (so,
12 11 10 9, then shift, 11 10 9 8 all the way down).
Be sure to keep your fingers close to the neck. I'm trying to break the habit of my pinky flying way up when
my ring or middle finger go to play their notes. Also, work on alternating your picking (down up down up).
