Hickory Days by Lake Fork Verne

          Hickory Days

        D G D
Hickory nuts is what Dad called them
                             A
Pecans, was the word used in town
       D G D
In the Fall, he would gather them in
                       A D
The best collector for miles a- round

       G D
In his striped engineers hat
                            A
And his faded Pay Day over- alls
   D G D
He would slip in and out of that timber like a cat
            A D
Without any effort at all

   D G D
He decided when the time was right
                            A
By the color of the hickory leaves
   D G D
He picked what he needed with touch so light
                       A D
And brought in buckets of nuts with ease

   D G D
He would crack them at the kitchen table at night
                           A
Using his knife and little vise
        D G D
Looking through the shadows with a coal oil light
                             A D
Packing the sweet kernels in bread wraps so nice

                     G D
Oh, the pies and the cakes that Mother made
                                 A
Tasted so good, flavored that a- way
          D G D
Thanks to Dad and his hickory days
                    A D
I can still see him hunting today

                            G D
