                        Settle Carlisle Railway

Tuning: E A D G B E
Key: C

[Verse 1]
C F C
In the year of '69 they planned to run a train
                          G C
From Settle to Carlisle across the mountain range
                               F C
They employed 3000 navvies to build this mighty road
                                        G C
Across the fells through Appleby that old steam engine rolled

[Chorus]
         Am
And it's up in the morning, lads
   F Em
In wind, snow or hail
Am
Hold fast your hammers, lads
    F G C
And lay another rail

[Verse 2]
      C F C
It's 72 miles from Settle to Carlisle
                        G C
Across the roughest country in all the British Isles
                                        F C
They said it would take 4 years, but it took up nearer seven
                                 G C
And the first 20 miles it sent 400 men to heaven

[Chorus]
         Am
And it's up in the morning, lads
   F Em
In wind, snow or hail
Am
Hold fast your hammers, lads
    F G C
And lay another rail

[Verse 3]
    C F C
Now when the winter came, it froze them to the floor
                                  G C
It blew them off the viaducts and killed them on Blee Moor
                            F C
Some died of the smallpox, some of cholera
                            G C
Chapel and St Leonards have many buried there

[Chorus]
         Am
And it's up in the morning, lads
   F Em
In wind, snow or hail
Am
Hold fast your hammers, lads
    F G C
And lay another rail

[Verse 4]
            C F C
Now if you ride this famous line across the heathered fells
                                     G C
When crossing Ribblehead viaduct remember the tale I tell
                                     F C
There's Mallerstang and Aisgill and Dent Dales lovely wilds
                              G C
And navvy lads a-slavin' from Settle to Carlisle

[Chorus]
         Am
And it's up in the morning, lads
   F Em
In wind, snow or hail
Am
Hold fast your hammers, lads
    F G C
And lay another rail
