Rattlesnake by St. Vincent

                              Rattlesnake

Tuning: Standard

Opening riff (played on synth bass) repeat through whole song
e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-6-8---8-66-8---88-6-------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-----6--------6------------------------------------------------------------|

First riff ("Whoah oh oh oh...")

e|-6-6-6-6-4-3---------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-6-6-6-6-4-3-3--3----------------------------------------------------------|
G|-------------3--3----------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Second riff ("sweating, sweating...")
Guitar 1:
e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-5h6---5h6---5h6----9-8-6--------------------------------------------------|
G|-----7-----7-----7--------8-7----------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Guitar 2:
e|-3h4---3h4---3h4----6-4----------------------------------------------------|
B|-----6-----6-----6---------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------5------------------------------------------------|
D|------------------------6---6----------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|

For the instrumental interlude after the chorus, repeat the second half of the riff.

There is also a simple rhythm part repeated through the chorus and instrumental:
e|-6-6--6-6------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-6-6--6-6------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-5-5--5-5------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|

And so on until the solo.

On the album it's all played sliding, using one finger, on one string:

e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|-1/13-13-13-13-11-8\5--11-11-11-10-8-5-5/6\5-3\1---------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Figure 2:

G|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|-15-13-15b17-/8\-/15-/20-17------------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|

The rest of the solo is just repeating those sections.

You can also play it this way, which is easier:

version 3

Tuning: Standard

Notes marked with b^½ means bend note up
a half step (or whatever amount it
indicates).

Solo (with fuzz and overdrive? shifter? I have no idea):

e|---------------------|
B|---------------------|
G|-/15--15-15-13-10-7--|
D|---------------------|
A|---------------------|
E|---------------------|

e|---------------------|------------|
B|---------------------|------------|
G|-/13--13-13-12-10-7--|-7b^½--5--3-| x2
D|---------------------|------------|
A|---------------------|------------|
E|---------------------|------------|

e|---------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------|
G|-/17---15-17b^¹--10-17---/21b^½-18b^½*-|
D|---------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------|

*Hold the last note indefinitely while
smirking before going on a crazy tremolo
tangent (bonus for tapping)

**18b^½ could also just be 19. She seems
to end it on the 19th fret live with a
bend? Basically play it however you want.
I just like bending a lot because it looks
cool and makes me feel like I look like
I know what I'm doing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
St. Vincent on the "Rattlesnake" solo:
"I was listening to Selda who is this
Turkish artist from the ’70s. In Turkey
they use an instrument called the saz
(I’m telling you what I’m sure you alread
know, so just humor me). In that case you
play the melodies on one string. So this
is probably getting too much in the
technical nerd world, but I knew that
the guitar part on “Rattlesnake” had to
sound rubbery so I had to find out how
to play it all on one string, so it felt
like it was a little ahead of the beat,
so it sounds more anxious than is
comfortable."
