Sleeping Lessons by The Shins

                             Sleeping Lessons

The pattern is played with some strange delay. The actual guitar strum comes in at
the chorus and the whole band kicks in after the second verse at about 2 minutes and a half in.

pattern for chords:
    E A B
e|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------|
B|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------|
G|-------------------|-------------------|--------1-4-1------|
D|-------------------|--------4-6-4------|----1-4-------4-1--|
A|--------4-6-4------|--0-4-7-------7-4--|--2----------------|
E|--0-4-7-------7-4--|-------------------|-------------------|

[intro]
E 4x

E
Go without 'til the need seeps in
	      A E
you're low anymore; collect your novel petals for the stem
E
and glow, glow; melt and flow

[verse]
E
eviserate your fragile frame
			    A E
spilled it all in ragged form; a thousand different versions of yourself
	      B A
and if the old gaurd still offend; you got nothing left on which you depend
 A
so enlist ounce of your bright blood and off with their heads

[chorus]
E A
Jump from the book; you're not obliged to swallow anything you despise

[verse]
					  E
See those unrepenting buzzards want your life
		  A
when they got no right; as sure as you have eyes
		E	B	A
they got no right

[verse]
E	A

E
Just put yourself in my new shoes; and see that I do what I do
	     B A
because the old gods still offend; we got nothing left on which we depend
 A
so we waste every ounce of your bright blood and off with their heads

[chorus]
E
Jump from the book; you're not obliged to swallow anything you despise

Plays out like this:

version 2

Tuning: Standard

Guitar at around 1:20 fades in with some dead notes:
e|-------------------|
b|-------------------|
g|--x--x--x--x-------|
d|--x--x--x--x-------|
a|--x--x--x--x-------|
E|--x--x--x--x-------|

keeps on keepin on until 2:18, where acoustic comes in with a snazzy riff:
e|--------------------------|
b|--------------------------|
g|--------------------------|
d|-----------6--------------| x4
a|-------7-9---9-7----------|
E|---5h9-----------9--------|

Chords bumpin in at 2:26 (breakdown):
e|------------------|
b|------------------|
g|-(1)--------------|
d|--2------6--------|
a|--2-x32--7-x32----|
E|--0------5--------|

2:44 "Just put yourself in my new shoes"
e|--------------------------|
b|--------------------------|
g|--1----(8)----1-----------|
d|--2-----9-----2-----2=----|
a|--2-x32-9-x32-2-x32-2=----|
E|--0-----7-----0-----0=----|

The handsome equal sign means 'let ring' which in the song is done... well until the end
the whole song really, but there's a whole lot of noise here with plenty of instruments
fill in the guitar silence... I'm pretty sure there's even a silly glockenspiel in
There are also some bare earable chords played a lil' here and there which are just
of the breakdown chords. Also, as a lil' bonus, I'll throw in the bass line, or at least
I percieve to be the bass line, which carries on throughout the whole song really:

e|-------------------|
b|-------------------|
g|-------------------|
d|----------1--------| x4
a|------2-4---4-2----|
E|--0-4-----------4--|

e|-------------------|
b|-------------------|
g|-------------------|
d|----------6--------| x4
a|------7-9---9-7----|
E|--5-9-----------9--|
